More Woke Racial HR Actions Behind the Scenes in Corporate America
Companies risk careers by attempting to force promotions based on race when a person may not be ready
Human Resources is the department in most corporations responsible for making immutable characteristics that we decided were wrong to discriminate against five minutes ago appropriate to do now.
I’m middle-management in one of those departments at one of the most famous global consulting firms. Race and sex are always emphasized during the hiring process, but it ramps up when it’s time for annual and mid-year reviews. Both factors can get you a promotion, but if you aren’t in the right group, you could miss out if there isn’t enough money for everyone. LGBT status gets considered too for who gets what when numbers get tight.
It’s an ugly and uncomfortable situation. My boss doesn’t like having these conversations but he participates because it’s his job. I had a to have a meeting with HR, Employee Relations, and Legal about the lack of minority promotions. We went back and analyzed three employees who could be minorities who didn’t get promoted. At one point, my boss looked at how white one person looked in her profile picture and then confirmed her race on a report.
